Though not to the exact same intensity, my childhood years within the Pentecostal framework carried some of the same indoctrination and psychological effects that Alice speaks of.And like her, I was unable to “receive” the “gift of tongues”. So I faked it as well as being “slain in the spirit”, my parents being none the wiser.But I do attribute my formative years within this setting as being my springboard to become radicalized into the conservative Mennonites and later the Old Order Amish. It took me over thirty years to finally “come to the light” of the truth of reality and science. And it was also quite devastating to me, having invested so much of my life and efforts, first to winning souls for Jesus in my evangelical phase, to preserving the faith at all costs in my Bible apologetics phase among the Mennonites and Amish.It took being disillusioned by failed prophecies among the Pentecostals, to blatant hypocrisy among the Mennonites, to a yearning for more knowledge than what I had been fed by my religious peers all my years, to wake me out of my religious cocoon.Alice’s book has inspired me to continue my efforts to write my own memoir, which has been in the works for some years, but has stalled due to my busy lifestyle as an “Amish Atheist” as I now call myself. And I have evolved and matured as well these last eight years since my formal exiting of the cult. I can now finally much better understand why my parents allowed themselves to be so effected in those wild Pentecostal assemblies, while I could not.And I now rejoice in my new-found freedom to live life to the fullest, unhindered by religious dogmas that condemned me as born in sin and the need to be a slave to the hard taskmaster portrayed in the Bible. Life is Good, unbelievably Good!
